Brush strip products

Fitting brush strip seals

Installers should ensure that the effectiveness of newly fitted seals will not be significantly impaired by any existing condition that may require remedial work. Brush strip seals should be fitted with the tips of the fill material just touching the surface to be sealed. Do not over-compress the seal as this may cause excessive wear or hinder the operation of the item being sealed.

SAFETY WARNING: Before fitting seals to areas with a fuel-burning appliance, ensure existing ventilation systems are checked for proper operation.

Cutting

When cutting brush strip products, it is important that the ends are correctly sealed to avoid spillage of the nylon filaments.

  • Slide the brush strip out of the carrier
  • Measure the length required and cut the carrier with a fine-tooth saw.
Tip: File a small lead in at one end of the carrier to aid re-assembly of the brush strip
  • Cut the brush strip to the required length with a pair of bolt croppers or similar side action cutters, thus fully closing the end
  • Slide the brush strip back into the carrier and lightly crimp the carrier to secure the brush.
  • To steel plate
    Machine screws
  • To sheet metal
    Aluminium pop rivets
  • To timber
    Countersunk or round-head screws
  • To masonry
Use suitable wall plugs with screws or fit to a timber batten
  • To glass
    Self-adhesive tape

Fixing

For fixing to the following materials, use fixings at approximately 250 mm to 300 mm centres:

Use and maintenance

Fitted in accordance with the recommended instructions and use under normal conditions, seals require no maintenance other than periodic cleaning with a damp cloth or detergent.

Storage tips

Products should be stored in dry ambient conditions taking care not to damage or crush flexible

Finishing and power tool brush products

What to do if the desired brushing effect is not obtained

If the brushing effect is too weak

Increase the peripheral speed by increasing the brush diameter or operating speed, decrease the trim length or increase the diameter of the fill material. Never exceed the maximum safe speed.

If the brushing effect is too powerful

Reduce the peripheral speed by reducing the brush diameter or operating speed, increase the trim height or decrease the diameter of the filling material.

If the surface finish is too rough

Increase the peripheral speed by increasing the brush diameter or operating speed, increase the trim height or decrease the diameter of the filling material. Never exceed the maximum safe speed.

If the surface finish is too smooth

Reduce the peripheral speed by reducing the brush diameter or operating speed, decrease the trim length or increase the diameter of the filling material.

Note: Excessive operating pressure or penetration depth will reduce the service life of the brush. The tips of the brush do the work with only a light pressure of 1 to 2.5mm

Safety information tips

Safety recommendations for working safely with power-driven brush tools.

The DIN standard EN 1083-2 governs the safety requirements imposed on power-driven brush tools.

The safety speed indicated on the brush, the label or the packaging must never be exceeded in some cases the recommended working speed is significantly below the maximum safe speed. The speed of the driving machine must never exceed the safe speed of the brush too. In order to increase the safety when working with power-driven brush tools, please observe the following measures.

Storage

Brush tools must always be stored in the relevant containers and suitable rooms, and be protected from deformation. Brush tools must be protected from water, acid, vapours or other substances that can cause damage.

Application

Always check brush tools prior to use for any signs of damage. If damaged, the brushes much be disposed. Only mount brush tools on machinery with the aid of suitable clamping fixtures. When working with shaft-mounted brushes the brushes must be clamped to the drill chuck.

Protection

All persons in the work area must wear suitable eye protection during the brushing process. Protective cases on machines must not be removed. Suitable ear protectors must be worn if noise levels exceed the limiting value and when brushing work is carried out, always take the relevant safety precautions, like extraction system, or dusk masks.

Disposal

Worn or damaged brushes must be disposed of correctly in accordance with local authority directives.

Because of the wide variety of machine types and applications, it is essential to follow the safety instruction and basic safety measures listed here. For more information and advice please look up the relevant laws, regulations, safety specifications and standards.
